These three modules are the Selective Iterated BoundarY Locator (SIBYL), the Scene Classification Algorithm (SCA), and the Hybrid Extinction Retrieval Algorithms (HERA), respectively.
The primary retrieval of layer optical properties is performed by HERA, however.
The subsequent tasks of computing final estimates of optical depth, and extracting profiles of particulate backscatter and extinction coefficients are carried out by the HERA module [
HERA is a hybrid collection of procedures that have been combined to form a single, fully automated scene process responsible for retrieving profiles of optical properties from the features identified by SIBYL.
Whereas SIBYL makes an initial estimate of the transmittance loss at 532-nm through a feature for the purpose of correcting the underlying signals for this attenuation, HERA calculates and corrects for attenuation within all features in order to produce profiles of extinction and backscatter at both 532 nm and 1064 nm.
